Recreation Minutes

April 6, 2004

Next meeting:  Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at Town Hall.

Budget - $15,000 in budget for fixed costs.  $23,000 in Special Rec. fund

Fundraising:  Banners - 2’x4’ metal banner from Brewster Signs - would cost $100 or so a year, plus cost of banner ($75 – 2 colors, white background.  Dover Ballfield uses this company.  Maureen Rooney – color banner info is available.  Metal sign like Dover’s, however, is more appropriate.

Wassaic Park

Wassaic Ballfield - Gate has been knocked down, bleachers need to be removed.

Good to clear outside of fence to stream.  Should plan for forest.  Need to clear parking area.    Vicki, Roger and Antoinette available for clean up April 17.

Amenia Ball Field – Improvements - P. Claire

Water should be turned on immediately at ball field.  Fence has been repaired.  Extend fencing for dug out will be paid for next year.   Polumbo has blocks – like to build up a concrete patch.  Fields need turf maintenance.  Infields are shot.  Grass needed for little league.  Dugouts min. of $5,000, lime of fields 2x per year.  Score board is $3,000.  Advertising money can help offset some costs.

Baseball Sign up is up over $1,000, more yet to come.  10 or 12 kids from Dover have signed up this year.  P. Claire said Dover charges $85 versus Amenia’s $20.  Joe and Pete McCaffrey should be asked about turning in old T-shirts.  15 or 20 kids came from Millerton.  Flyers went out to schools.  Farm league is 3-12.   Little League is try-out only, aged 9-12.

Intermunicipal Recreation – Let’s see if ball sports can be included in Intermunicipal Recreation.  P. Claire will talk to J. Scutieri and John Heck.  Need to know when the next intermunicipal meeting is, who schedules.  Was Justine Winters.  Millerton has pulled out of playing with Amenia.  Baseball in Millerton was thriving 4 years ago, but are not funding recreation appropriately.  Amenia spends $8,000 on baseball.  Joe Mateo left Millerton last year and program was run into the ground.   We had 150 members, they had 50, so the numbers worked well logistically.  Millerton going to instructional league, easier for them but ruins our program.  P. Claire will continue next year only if these issues can be straightened out.

Funding Requests:

1.  Summer Band concert – Bob Cook – would like Rec. committee to sponsor this.

Would be held at Amenia Elementary School campus.

August 15, Aug. 22 as raindate.– 5:30 or 6:00 or so – 2 hours w/ intermission

People bring picnics.  10-piece band would play music of 40’s or 50’s – brassy-type band

Need volunteers to put together, prepare budget.  Lyons Club has amplifiers.

Perhaps incorporate High School band?   Time to do this this year?

Charge admission?  Sponsors– Chamber of Commerce, Millbrook Bank, Four Brothers

Cost:  $2,000 for band, $1,500 for rest (Need a platform, etc.) = $3,500

2.  Community Mural– Moira Kelly – did Saperstein mural.  It was suggested mural would be great for 300th Anniversary on side of FoodTown facing Rt. 44.

Insurance is a big problem.  Moira is meeting with Noah Katz about insurance.

Want children, all ages involved in design, painting.

Scaffolding:  Have worked with communities before, but have not dealt with ladders, scaffolding.  Accordions are safest, but expensive to rent. Building is 24’ high.  First 3 or 4 feet won’t be seen.  Always going to be cars parked there, and there is a dip.  (2) 8x4 bakers would be great.  If used properly, is safe.

Could tack canvas up on a wall, then cut out and apply to building.  Small parts might be do-able in this manner.

Theme:  Images from racetrack, circus, fairground history of the location.  Colorful motif – written up in historical account  - had 90 gray horses, 4 camels, lgest Elephant, etc.

Timing:  In May, begin drawing, get input, comments, put up color chart.  End w/ scale drawing.  Transfer to wall, section by section.
